Safety & Security Corner
I just returned from a Community Security Service retreat in Pennsylvania. The retreat included intensive training in both security theory and practice, led by national and international leaders of Jewish security services (the leader of our group is a security expert from the South African Jewish community). In addition there were amazing talks by folks who have their fingers on the pulse of Jewish safety and security throughout the world. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend. I learned a lot and I am eager to share what I learned and apply those lessons to Torat Emet.
Perhaps the most important take-home message I received, however, was not about evacuation routes and lock-downs. Instead, the most important message was simply the beauty of Jewish life and the Jewish way-of-life.
It would be easy to become paranoid if one simply tracked attacks on Jewish institutions (and believe me, we saw more than our share of videos from such attacks). However, it is important to keep in mind that none of those attacks have thwarted our sense of Jewish life, community, observance, and everything else that comes along with it. Instead, we become stronger as a people, particularly when we focus on ways to allow us to continue our Jewish way of life. There are many communities under attack across America, and I met many community members struggling with anti-semitism, random attacks, vandalism, etc. However, despite all of the challenges, they continue to strengthen their communities’ security and in doing so, allow the Jewish way-of-life to progress and grow.
It is with this idea in mind that we should not view our increasing security efforts as trying to create a fortress to lock out the world. Instead, we should see these efforts as enhancing the fertile ground that allows us to grow.
Shabbat Shalom!
Thank you to to for partnering with us to provide our security for Shabbat and Holidays
Join the New Chesed Committee! Dear Fellow Congregants,
It would be my privilege to partner with you, the Torah Emet Community, in designing and executing a most holy mission.
It is my hope to work together to build ongoing support for our members in times of sickness, stress and loss through acts of Chesed. As a start, I am asking for volunteers to help design effective strategies to connect our community members with opportunities for service. The range of needs are of course vast, encompassing Bikur Cholim, Meals, Regular Check-ins, Social Action and so much more.
Would you like to get real time Torat Emet notifications, hear about volunteer opportunities, and share cheerful tidings and thoughts with fellow Torat Emet members here and in Israel?
Have meaningful and uplifting social and informational conversations (no politics allowed) with your Torat Emet friends. We look forward to hearing from you.
